Angular Stomatitis

lips disease

This is essentially  an intertrigo which is due to maceration of the fold at the corner of the mouth with saliva. Secondary infection may take place especially with candida. It is usually bilateral and when unilateral occurs on the side on which the patient sleeps. It is seen in individuals who have worn dentures for some years and results from a change of bite. Slowly over the years the vertical distance between the nose and chin lessens with a consequent folding in of the skin at the corners of the mouth.

Treatment

consists of correction of the bite by new dentures. The application of an antibiotic lotion, nystatin  or ½  Aqueous  silver nitrate morning and evening hastens healing.
